The August Rain

Too Late

For YK

In the photograph my grandmother is lain

In her coffin. The skin has sagged
Softly in
Between her mouth, nose and chin,
And drawn tight around her forehead.
I never met her

So this picture in a way is a thing,
A thing without any meaning,
As blank as
The dimpled surface of the snow,
In which the coffin is laid,
As fragile and empty

As her withered body. Empty facts too.
She was imprisoned in Vorkuta,
Where she worked
As slave labour
And then lay down to sleep
In wooden barracks

Without heat. She died in eighty-eight,
Still exiled by a government,
Of being innocent,
Punished for the crime,
Of living in the wrong place and the wrong time.

Change came, as it always comes,
Late, difficult, uncertain.
Let it seep,
Gently into her skeleton,
And let her sleep begin to warm
With dreams, a tentative
Cyrillic dawn.

Praise for The August Rain. ..

This is a book through which memory and its voices lap like waves. Whether it be in his own luminous writing, or through his translations and versions of others, Komarnyckyj communicates a quiet fire that is often 'stringent as redemption' demanding to be read and acknowledged, and offering profound rewards in return.

Sean Street, poet and BBC Broadcaster.

Drawing force ... from an English visionary tradition that leads right back to Caedmon and the fevered restlessness of some Slavic poetries, Stephen Komarnyckyj’s is a serious poetry of life’s elemental mysteries and sorrows.
